Things we lost in the fire
Things we lost in the fire review
Things We Lost In The Fire’ tells the story of a woman (Halle Berry) who loses her husband (David Duchovny) and recovers the friendship he had with a childhood friend (Benicio del Toro) whom she hated because he was a drug addict.
Things We Lost in the Fire’ is directed by Susanne Bier, who recently released in our country the dogma-style film ‘After the Wedding’. As in that film, in this one Bier uses handheld camera and discontinuous editing, but in a more restrained way. The production direction results in a very elegant look and this way of filmmaking -although it seems more typical of a Danish semi-documentary film- does not clash with the sumptuousness of the great American dramas.
A wise move in the script of ‘Things We Lost in the Fire’, which was written by Allan Loeb, is to begin the story with the husband’s funeral, that is, to give us before anything else the information that he is dead -except for a very brief sequence that is set up in parallel-.
